Ron Spencer
Chances are if you do not know Ron Spencer by name, you would recognize him. He participates in many road
races throughout the Central New York area and is often described by his peers as the runner with the warm smile and
friendly demeanor.
Ron first became involved in running in 1980. Inspired by his younger brother who was an active runner, Ron began
to run so they would have an activity they could do together. Not long after his feet first hit the pavement, he entered
a road race. It was not the typical 5k that most new runners try for the first time. Ron’s first race was the now defunct
Miller Brewery 10-miler which was held in Fulton.
Over the twenty plus years that Ron has been racing, he has amassed some impressive pr’s. He has done the
Dr. T. 5k in 18:23, the Oneida Hospital 10k in 38:40 and a 3 hour and 41 minute marathon in Portland, Maine.
Although he feels he may not ever break these pr’s, he still enjoys running as much as he ever did. These days,
Ron prefers distance running. He averages four marathons a year. This past fall he participated in the Philadelphia
marathon and by the time of this publication, he will have completed another marathon in Hyannis.
Ron runs a phenomenal 55+ races a year. He has done so many it is somewhat difficult to pick a favorite. However,
he does look especially forward to two each year- the Utica Boilermaker and the Ottawa marathon, which is held over
Mother’s Day Weekend.
One of Ron’s favorite places to train is Onondaga Lake Park. He runs approximately 45-50 miles per week. He has
no set training schedule; he just runs whatever he feels like running that day. He may run only a few miles one day
but then the next day he may pound out 15 miles. By keeping his running unregimented, it stays fresh and exciting to
him.
Ron is originally from Fulton and now lives in Central Square. He comes from a large family of seven brothers and
sisters. He has worked for the Phoenix School District for 23 years. During his down time from running, Ron enjoys
biking and has even participated in a duathlon, which he felt was quite challenging. He also likes to attend SU football
and basketball events, as well as Syracuse Crunch and Oswego State hockey games.
Next time you participate in a local race and see the familiar runner with the warm smile, don’t hesitate to
say "Hi Ron!" It is certain you will get a friendly greeting in return.
